God's Word

Mark 6:2

When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonsihed. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!

God's Word Today

Jesus went to teach in the synagogue. A synagogue is like a church. It is where the men went to learn about God. We go to church to learn about God. When we read the Bible, Jesus is teaching us.

To Do Today

Today, think about something Jesus has taught you. Tell a friend.

God's Word

Luke 2:22

When the days were completed for thier purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

God's Word Today

When Jesus was a baby, the Jewish law said to take the baby to the temple and present him to the Lord. Mary and Joseph were good parents. They followed the law and took Jesus to the temple. In most churches today, parents take their baby to church and present their baby to the Lord. Ask your parents if they took you when you were a baby.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus as a baby.

God's Word

Mark 6:14a

King Herod heard about Jesus, for his fame had become widespread.

God's Word Today

Jesus performed miracles. This made him famous. Even the King of Israel heard about him. When people act like Jesus, they will be known also. People want to hear stories of love. People want to believe there are still miracles.

To Do Today

Today, sing a song you have learned in Sunday School. Sing a song about Jesus.

Mark 6:31a and 32

Jesus said to the Apostles

"Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while."

So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.

God's Word Today

The Apostles had worked hard. They needed to rest. You have worked hard. You need to rest also.

To Do Today

Today, find a quiet place to rest. Talk to Jesus.

God's Word

Mark 1:32a

When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill.

God's Word Today

When Jesus was here on earth he healed many people who were sick. Whenever he entered a town, the people would bring all the sick people to him so that he would heal them. Today, you can invite Jesus to come and heal someone you know who is sick.

To Do Today

Today, pray for someone you know who is sick. Ask Jesus to heal them.

God's Word

Mark 6:56

Whatever villages or towns or courntryside he entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak; and as many as touched it were healed.

God's Word Today

People that saw Jesus knew without a doubt that He would heal them. They looked for Him and begged Him to heal them. People still do this today. They look for Jesus and beg Him to heal them. Scientists have shown that people who pray heal faster than those who do not.

To Do Today

Today, think about what you will do whenever you are sick. Will you ask Jesus to heal you?

God's Word

Mark 7:15

"Nothing that enters one from the outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.

God's Word Today

Jesus is explaining that what makes us do bad things are when we think bad thoughts. It is what is inside our hearts that make us do bad things. Things like anger, hatred, lies, gossip, worry are the things Jesus is talking about

To Do Today

Today, make a list of good things to think about. Ask your family to help you.

Mark 7:29

Jesus said to her,

"Woman, for saying this, you may go. The demon has come out of your daughter."

God's Word Today

The woman had asked Jesus to heal her daughter. She had an evil spirit which means she was full of evil thoughts. Because the woman had faith that Jesus would heal her daughter, he told her that He did.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your family about evil spirits or thoughts. Think of ways to keep them away from you.

Mark 7:34

Jesus looked up to heaven and said to the deaf man,

"Be opened."

The man's ears were opened.

Mark 8:5-6

"How many loaves do you have?"

They replied, "Seven.: He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd.

God's Word Today

The crowd was hungry. But Jesus only had seven loaves of bread. He performed another miracle. He made it so the seven loaves fed four thousand people. That is a miracle.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of seven loaves of bread. Think about that bread feeding 4,000 people.

God's Word

1 Corinthians 10:31

Brothers and sisters: Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense, whether to the Jews or Greeks or the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved. Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

God's Word Today

Paul is a disciple of Jesus. He tries to imitate Jesus. That means he tries to act like Jesus. He wants you to try to act like Jesus also. So he gives you advice. He says to give God glory no matter what you are doing. If you are eating or drinking, praise God and thank Him for the food. He says not to offend others. That means to be nice to everyone, even people you don't like. Will this be easy? No, but it is what Jesus wants you to do.

To Do Today

Today, think of ways you can imitate Jesus. What would He do? Go out and treat someone in your neighborhood like Jesus would do.

God's Word

Mark 8:11a

The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with Jesus.

God's Word Today

The Pharisees were religious leaders when Jesus lived on earth. They did not believe in Jesus. They did not believe that He was the Son of God. There are many people today like the Pharisees who do not believe in Jesus. Jesus loved the Pharisees and tried to teach them. We need to love those who do not believe and pray for them. Maybe we can teach them about Jesus. Maybe we can show them who Jesus is by being nice to them and helping them.

To Do Today

Today, do something nice to someone who does not believe in Jesus.

Mark 8:17b-18

"Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember?"

God's Word Today

Jesus is asking His disciples and us if we truly believe in him. Sometimes we don't really believe that He is there. He says our hearts are hard when we have doubts. He wants us to believe in Him with all our heart. He wants us to hear His word. He wants us to see Him in others.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your family about ways to see and hear Jesus.

Mark 8:22 and 25

When Jesus and his disciples arrived at Bethsaida, people brought to him a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. The he laid hands on the man's eyes and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly.

God's Word Today

Jesus traveled around Israel and performed many miracles. Do you know where the town of Bethsaida is? It is one of the towns Jesus traveled to. He traveled by foot. He walked everywhere he went. How do you travel?

To Do Today

Today, look on a map in your Bible or on the Internet for the city of Bethsaida.

Mark 8:27 and 29b

Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples,

"Who do people say that I am?"

Peter said to him in reply, "You are the Christ."

God's Word Today

Jesus is traveling again. On the way He talks to His disciples. Jesus wanted to be sure the disciples knew who He was. Who do you say Jesus is?

To Do Today

Today, look up in your Bible or the Internet the villages of Caesarea Philippi.

God's Word

Mark 8:38

"Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling you that if you are ashamed to tell people you love Him then he will be ashamed to tell His Father and the angels about you. What does this mean? This means if you want Jesus tosay good things about you to the angels, then you need to say good things about Him here on earth.

To Do Today

Today, tell someone something good about Jesus. Tell them you love Jesus.

God's Word

Mark 9:12b

Jesus said to them,

"It is written regarding the Son of Man, that he must suffer greatly and be treated with contempt."

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling the disciples what will happen to him. He calls Himself the Son of Man. Jesus has many names in the Bible.

To Do Today

Today, find other names for Jesus.

God's Word

Isaiah 43:18 and 25

Thus says the Lord: Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not: It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more.

God's Word Today

Isaiah is a prophet and he is telling people that God will not remember your sins. He will wipe them away from his memory. This is a promise God makes to those who believe in Him. Are you happy that God doesn't remember your mistakes? He forgives you as long as you love Him.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the mistakes you made this week. Put the list in your Bible and give them to God. They are forgiven. Thank God for His forgiveness and for helping you do better next week.

God's Word

Mark 9:23-24

Jesus said to the man,

"Everything is possible to one who has faith."

The man cried out, "I do believe, help my unbelief!"

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling the man that if you believe, everything is possible. He wants you to think positive and believe in Him. He wants you to believe in truth. With that kind of faith, you can do many great things.

To Do Today

Today, ask your parents how their faith has helped them accomplish things. Think of something you want to do. Do you believe you can do it? Ask your parents to help you build your faith.

Mark 9:36-37

Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them,

"Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me."

God's Word Today

Most people love children. Jesus is telling His disciples to love everyone like you would love a child. Why do you think most people love children compared to loving adults?

To Do Today

Today, talk to your family about why it is easier to love a child than an adult. What can you do to help you love everyone?

ASH WEDNESDAY

God's Word

Matthew 6:17-18

“When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

God's Word Today

Today is the first day of lent. Lent lasts for forty days. Most people fast during lent. This means it is a time to look into yourself and decide on a bad habit you have that you want to change. This is a good time to change that bad habit. But Jesus says not to tell everyone. Just do it for God. Lent is also a time to start a good habit. If you do something for forty days, it becomes a habit. Try and think of a good thing you want to have as a habit and make that part of your fast for lent.

To Do Today

Today, decide what your fast will be. Pick a bad habit to stop doing and a good habit to start doing.

God's Word

Luke 9:22

Jesus said,

“The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling his disciples what will happen to Him. He knew that people were going to laugh at Him and make fun of Him. He knew that people were going to beat Him. He knew that they would kill Him. In spite of this, Jesus did all these things for us. He did not run away. He did not tell God He couldn’t do it. He was brave and gave his life for you. Jesus wants you to be brave also. He wants you to love Him, because He gave His life for you.

To Do Today

Today, thank Jesus for suffering and giving His life for you.

God's Word

Isaiah 58:6-7

This is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the things of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.

God's Word Today

There are many ways to fast. God lists several above. Most of the time, we can’t do what God is asking, but we can support people who do these things. These are things that happen when we support our church. These are things that happen when we live like God wants us to. Is there any way you can do one of the things God has asked? Maybe you can help fix sandwiches for the shelters. Maybe you can give some of your clothes to the poor. Maybe you can give some of your allowance to the Church. Maybe you can help your family with what God has asked.

To Do Today

Today, think of a way you can do one of the things God asks above. Ask your parents to help you.

God's Word

Luke 5:31-32

Jesus said to them in reply,

“Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do.”

God's Word Today

Have you ever said to your family that you do not want to go to church today? Do you ever think that you don’t need church because you are always a good person? Church is like a hospital. The sick go there to be healed. But the hospital needs healthy people there too. They need to be there to help the sick people. God needs you in church so you can give someone a hug and tell people you care.

To Do Today

When you go to church this weekend, smile at everyone you see and say a prayer for them.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

God's Word

Mark 1:12-13

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.

God's Word Today

Jesus went into the desert to fast for forty days. The devil came to pester Jesus. The devil wanted Jesus to sin. But the angels came to help Jesus. Do you know that the angels help you also when you are tempted to do something wrong. You can ask Jesus for help and He will send His angels to help you.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus in the desert surrounded by angels. Draw a picture of you in your yard surrounded by the same angels.

God's Word

Leviticus 19:11

You shall not steal. You shall not lie or speak falsely to one another.

God's Word Today

This word of God is very clear. He does not want you to steal. He does not want you to lie. Speaking falsely to one another is the same as not telling the truth. Why do you think God does not want you to tell lies or to steal? How do you feel if someone steals from you? How do you feel if someone lies to you? It makes you angry. That is why God does not want you to do these things.

To Do Today

Today, think about a time you lied or took something that did not belong to you. Tell God you are sorry. If you can, tell the person you lied to or stole from that you are sorry.

God's Word

Matthew 6:12-13

“If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

God's Word Today

A transgression is another word for sin. Transgression means that someone does something to hurt another person. Lent is a time to forgive sins. God wants us to forgive anyone who has hurt us in any way. He wants us to forgive anyone who has sinned against us or someone we know. If we cannot forgive, we cannot expect God to forgive us when we make a mistake or when we hurt someone else. God wants to forgive everyone. That is why Jesus died for us. We just have to ask.

To Do Today

Today, think of someone who has hurt you or who has sinned against someone you know. Pray to God and ask Him to forgive them.

God's Word

Jonah 3:6a and 8b

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne and proclaimed: “Every man shall turn from his evil way and from the violence he has in hand.”

God's Word Today

Jonah went to the king of Nineveh with a message from God. Jonah told the people that God was not happy with their evil ways and sins. Jonah warned the people. In this story, the people listened to God. The king, who was the ruler of the people, ordered the people to stop being bad. The king and the people listened to Jonah. They repented and changed their ways. This made God very happy. Sometimes our parents point out something we are doing that is not right. We can do like the people of Ninevah and listen to our parents. We can ask God to help us change our ways. We can try to turn the bad habit into a good habit, then God and our parents will be very pleased.

To Do Today

Today, think about something your parents or teachers have told you that you should not do. Make a decision today to change that bad habit. What good habit could you replace it with?
