Luke 4:43-44

But he said to them,

"To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent."

And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

God's Word Today

Jesus was sent to earth to teach the good news about salvation. He wanted everyone to know about the Kingdom of God. You can be like Jesus and tell people about the Kingdom of God.

To Do Today

Today, tell someone about Jesus.

God's Word

Luke 5:10b-11

Jesus said to Simon,

"Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men."

When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

God's Word Today

When Jesus called the disciples, they left everything they knew to follow Him. They loved Him that much.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus and His disciples.

God's Word

Luke 5:33a

The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, "The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers."

God's Word Today

In Jesus time people often fasted when they prayed. To fast means to do without something, usually food. This is because it makes you closer to God. Have you ever fasted before?

To Do Today

Today, talk to your family about fasting. Think of a way to fast when you have a very important prayer.

God's Word

Luke 6:5

And Jesus said to them,

"The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."

God's Word Today

What does it mean to be lord of the sabbath? It means that Jesus is the main person. Jesus is the one you should worship and think about on Sunday. Jesus wants you to think about Him all of the time, but especially on Sunday, because that is His special day of worship.

To Do Today

Today, help your family prepare a special meal. Dedicate this meal to Jesus.

God's Word

Luke 14:27

"Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple."

God's Word Today

Everyone in this world has their own cross to bear. This means every person has problems. No one has a perfect life. Even Jesus had to suffer. He was beaten and crucified. So you will have problems in your life. What Jesus wants you to do is be brave and face your problems. That is what He means when He says to carry your own cross. You can always ask Him to help you.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all of your problems. Give them to Jesus.

God's Word

Luke 6:6

On a certain sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and taught.

God's Word Today

The synagogue is like a church. When Jesus was alive, men went into the synagogue to learn about God. Jesus loved to teach people about God. He still does. You can learn about Jesus in church, at home and at school. Jesus is everywhere and He teaches us every day.

To Do Today

Today, find a place to sit and learn about Jesus.

God's Word

Luke 6:12

Jesus departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God.

God's Word Today

Jesus often went to be by himself and pray. He worked very hard. His work was difficult. He needed to take time to be by himself and pray. Do you work hard? You need to take time to be alone and pray, just like Jesus did. It will help you be strong and healthy.

To Do Today

Today, find a special place where you can be alone to pray.

God's Word

Luke 6:22-23

"Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way."

God's Word Today

Has anyone ever made fun of you or teased you because you love Jesus? Jesus is telling you that this is a good thing. If someone teases you or hates you because you love Jesus, then that means you really love Him. And you will be rewarded in heaven. Do not be sad. Be happy and think about your reward. All of the angels will sing and dance.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of heaven with the angels singing and dancing.

God's Word

Luke 6:27-28

Jesus said to his disciples,

"To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you."

God's Word Today

Yesterday you learned that you are blessed if people hate you because you love Jesus. Today Jesus tells you to love your enemies and pray for them. Jesus wants them to turn from their evil ways and love Him. Your prayers help Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the people you don't like. Pray for them.

God's Word

Luke 6:40

Jesus said,

"No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher."

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling His disciples that they will never be superior to Him, their teacher. But if they train and study Jesus, they will be like Him. Jesus wants you to learn all you can about Him so that you will be like Him also. If you are like Him, you will be able to love your enemies and pray at all times.

To Do Today

Today, think about something you like about Jesus. Try and act like that today.

God's Word

Luke 6:46

"Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' but not do what I command?"

God's Word Today

It upsets Jesus when you tell Him you love Him, but then turn around and break one of His commandments. If you love Jesus, you need to try and follow all of His commandments. He especially wants you to love everyone. Can you do that? It is very difficult to live like Jesus, but it makes Him very happy when you try.

To Do Today

Today, show someone in your family or neighborhood that you love them. What can you do to show that?

God's Word

Luke 14:4-7

"What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance."

God's Word Today

Jesus wants to find all of his lost sheep. He wants to find all of his children. When you repent and turn to Jesus, everyone in heaven celebrates. They sing and dance with joy.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of a lost sheep. You can paste cottonballs on it to make it look like a sheep. Play hide and seek with the sheep. Do you get excited when you find it?

God's Word

Luke 7:2,7b,9-10

A centurian had a slave who was ill. He sent for Jesus and said, "Say the word and let my servant be healed." Jesus was amazed at him and, turning to the crowd following him, said,

"I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith."

When the messenger returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

God's Word Today

The centurian was so sure that Jesus could heal his slave that he told Jesus not to come, but to just say the word and the slave would be healed. That is strong faith. Jesus loves it when you have strong faith in Him. He loves it when you believe in Him.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the prayers Jesus has answered for you. Tell Him thank you.

God's Word

John 3:13-17

Jesus said to Nicodemus:

"No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."

God's Word Today

Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins. Because He died for us, you can have eternal. The cross is the symbol of His death. Whenever you see a cross, you remember that Jesus died for you. You have eternal life because He died on the cross for you.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of a cross. Hang it in your room so you will always remember how Jesus died for you.

God's Word

Luke 7:31-32a

Jesus said to the crowds:

"To what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another."

God's Word Today

Jesus is unhappy with the men and women of His time because they taunt and tease each other instead of being helpful and caring. Do you like people who tease? Do you like people who make fun of others? Jesus did not like this. Jesus wants you to help others and to love them.

To Do Today

Today, plan to help someone.

God's Word

Luke 7:49-50

The others at the table said to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" But he said to the woman,

"Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

God's Word Today

The disciples were amazed that Jesus forgave the woman who had sinned. Jesus says He will forgive anyone who believes in Him and has the faith to trust Him. Do you believe in Jesus? Do you trust Him?

To Do Today

Today, be like Jesus and forgive someone who has done something bad to you or someone who has made you mad or unhappy. Do you feel better?

God's Word

Luke 8:1

Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God.

God's Word Today

Jesus could talk about the Kingdom of God because He was from there. He knew His Father and He loved to tell people about Him. Do you like to talk about where you are from?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of your neighborhood. Circle all the things you like about your neighborhood.

God's Word

Luke 8:4

When a large crowd gathered, with people from one town after another journeying to Jesus, he spoke in a parable.

God's Word Today

Many people traveled from far away to hear Jesus speak. Jesus knew that they might not understand Him so he spoke in parables. Parables are stories meant to teach something. Can you think of parables about your life today?

To Do Today

Today, ask your parents to help you make up a parable about something in your life.

God's Word

1 Timothy 2:1-2

Beloved: First of all, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.

God's Word Today

Paul asks you to pray for everyone. He wants you to especially pray for the leaders of your country. When Paul was alive, the leaders were kings. Today the leaders in our country are the president and Congress. Paul wants you to pray for them so that those in our country can lead a quiet and peaceful life.

To Do Today

Today, look at a map of the United States. Make a list of the president and the congressmen from your state. You can find this information in the phone book or online.

God's Word

Luke 8:16

Jesus said to the crowd,

"No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light."

God's Word Today

Do you know the song "This Little Light of Mine"? In the song and in this verse, Jesus tells you that you are His light. Do not hide and keep your light from shining. What does that mean? It means that through you, when you show love and gentleness and patience, you are showing the world Jesus. That is why He wants you to love others, so they will see Him.

To Do Today

Today, sing the song "This Little Light of Mine".

God's Word

Luke 8:21

He said to them in reply,

"My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it."

God's Word Today

If you hear the word of God and act on it, then Jesus says you are His brother or sister. If you believe in Jesus, you are a child of God. That also makes you His brother or sister. Doesn't that make you happy?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of you with Jesus. Are you playing, reading, singing, or dancing?

God's Word

Luke 9:1-2

Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

God's Word Today

Who are the Twelve that Jesus summoned? They are the twelve disciples. He told them to go forth and tell everyone about Him. He gave them the power to heal the sick. Do you know that you are like a disciple? Jesus wants you to tell people about Him.

To Do Today

Today, tell someone about Jesus. If you know a sick person, pray for them.

God's Word

Luke 9:7a

Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed.

God's Word Today

A tetrarch is like a governor. He was in charge of Israel. He heard about all the miracles and he was perplexed. To be perflexed means to be confused. He didn't know Jesus, so he didn't understand that Jesus and His disciples could perform miracles. When people don't know Jesus, they don't understand miracles. They think they are magic or luck. But you know Jesus. You know He performs miracles.

To Do Today

Today, tell someone about a miracle you have seen. Tell them the miracle was because of faith in Jesus.

God's Word

Luke 9:22

Jesus said,

"The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised."

God's Word Today

Jesus knew that people like Herod who didn't understand who He was, would be afraid of Him and His powers. So they planned to kill him. But Jesus told His disciples that He would be raised on the third day. Do you think this made them feel better?

To Do Today

Today, find pictures of Jesus on the cross. Thank Him for suffering for you.

God's Word

Luke 9:43b-44

While they were amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples,

"Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."

God's Word Today

Jesus warned His disciples that He was to suffer and be killed. But they saw all the miracles and didn't believe anything bad could happen to Jesus. But Jesus needed to die for us. He needed to sacrifice for our sins.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus and his twelve disciples.

God's Word

1 Timothy 6:11-12a

But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life.

God's Word Today

Since you are a child of God, Paul advises you to try and be righteous. He says to try and love everyone and be patient and gentle. These are all signs that you love Jesus. They will help you find eternal life with Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the ways you were patient and gentle this past week. Jesus is smiling. Are you?

God's Word

Luke 9:47-48

Jesus took a child and placed it by his side and said to the disciples,

"Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."

God's Word Today

The disciples were fighting over who was the greatest. Jesus wanted to show them that the greatest was the one who had the simple faith like a child. You do not need to be fancy or important to be great in the kingdom of God. All you need is t have faith and believe in Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, list all the people you know who have real faith in Jesus. Are they better than you? You are all great because you believe.

Tuesday

God's Word

Luke 9:51

When the days for Jesus to be be taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem.

God's Word Today

Jesus knew it was time to stop teaching and sacrifice His life for all of us including you. He could have turned away. But He was brave and suffered so that you might be saved. He loves you that much.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your family and discuss ways they have suffered or sacrificed because they love you. Have you sacrificed because you love them? Discuss this also. This will make your faith grow strong.

Wednesday
September 29, 2010

God's Word

Luke 9:57

As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding on their journey, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."

God's Word Today

Would you be brave enough to tell Jesus that you would follow Him? This man was willing to leave his family and follow Jesus. Today there are people who do leave their families and fo far away to be missionaries. A person has to be very brave and have a lot of faith to do this.

To Do Today

Today, ask your family about the missionaries from your church. Think of a way you can help them.

God's Word

Luke 10:1-2

Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them,

"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest."

God's Word Today

Jesus knows that there are many people who long to hear the good news about Him. But there are few people who will sacrifice and leave their families to tell others about Jesus. Jesus asks you to pray for more people to go out and tell others about Him. Do you think you can be one of those people?

To Do Today

Today, talk to your family and plan ways you can tell others about Jesus while you are still at home.
