God's Word

Luke 2:21

When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

God's Word Today

Jesus’ parents took Him to the temple as was the law. Gabriel had told Mary to name the baby Jesus. Mary obeyed. Do you know how your name was chosen? Does your family have pictures of when you were taken to church and christened and given your name?

To Do Today

Today, ask your parents how they picked your name.

God's Word

John 1:26-27

John answered them, “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”

God's Word Today

When John grew up, he went around proclaiming the coming of Christ. He begged people to be baptized and ask forgiveness for their sins before they met Jesus. Are you baptized? Ask your parents to tell you about your baptism.

To Do Today

Today, pretend you are going to meet Jesus. What would you say to Him?

God's Word

John 1:35

John was standing with two of his disciples and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God."

God's Word Today

John saw Jesus and called Him the "Lamb of God". Jesus is often called the "Lamb of God." Can you guess why? In the days of the Old Testamet, the people sacrificed or killed a lamb and offered it to God. Jesus is called a lamb because He was sacrificed or killed to save us from our sins. He is the Lamb of God.

To Do Today

Today, ask your parents why people sacrificed a lamb. What does that mean?

God's Word

John 1:51

Jesus said,

"Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

God's Word Today

This verse is talking about what you will see when Jesus comes again. The first time Jesus came to earth, he came as a baby and was born in a manger because there was no room at the inn. But the next time Jesus comes to earth, you will see angels going up and down from heaven to earth and Jesus will be with them.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus coming down from heaven. Draw the angels traveling up and down with Him.

God's Word

Matthew 2:9b-11

And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. They they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

God's Word Today

The wise men traveled many miles to see Jesus. Have you traveled to see someone you love? Were you excited when you arrived? Imagine how excited the three men were to see Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of the three wise men.

God's Word

1 John 3:24

Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them, and the way we know that he remains in us is from the Spirit whom he gave us.

God's Word Today

John is explaining that the way we know the Holy Spirit is with us is because we want to follow God's commandments. We want to do good. We may not always do good, but we feel bad when we don't.

To Do Today

Today, list all the things you do today that are good.

God's Word

1 John 4:7

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.

God calls His children beloved. It means He loves you very, very much. Don't you love being called beloved? God wants you to love everyone just like He does.

God's Word

1 John 4:20-21

If anyone says, "I love God," but hates his brother, he is a liar, for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. This is the commandment we have from him: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

God's Word Today

Because God is love, He cannot hate anyone. If you love God, truly love God, then you cannot hate anyone either. This is very difficult. You don't have to like what the person does, but you have to try and understand the person and try to love them as God does. It helps to pray for the people you don't love.

To Do Today

Today, pray for all of the people you don't like.

God's Word

1 John 5:13

I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.

God's Word Today

The disciple John is explaining to us that if we believe in Jesus as the Son of God, then you will have eternal life. This means you will live forever in heaven with Jesus. All you have to do is believe Jesus is the Son of God.

To Do Today

Today, tell someone that Jesus is the Son of God.

God's Word

1 John 5:14

We have this confidence in him that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

God's Word Today

God hears everything. He hears everything you ask. If you ask God anything that is good or in His will, He hears you and He answers you.

To Do Today

Today, talk to God. Ask Him something and then keep looking all week for the answer.

God's Word

Luke 3:21-22

After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized, heaven was opened and the Holy spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

God's Word Today

The Holy Spirit came to Jesus when He was baptized. The Holy Spirit comes to you when you are baptized. Because of this verse, the church uses the dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of a dove.

Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:

"This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.

God's Word Today

Jesus tells the people and us that the kingdom of God is at hand. This means He is here with us. He wants us to believe that He is with us now.

Mark 1:21

Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.

God's Word Today

Capernaum is a town in Israel. A synagogue is like a church. The men went there to learn about God. Jesus was teaching the men about God.

To Do Today

Today, look at the map in the back of your Bible and find the town of Capernaum. You might find pictures of the town in an encyclopedia or on the Internet.

Jesus told them,

"Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come."

God's Word Today

Jesus traveled around Israel and taught the people about God. That was one of the reasons He came. People gathered in large crowds to hear Him teach. Where do you learn about Jesus and God?

To Do Today

Today, look at the map again and see what towns are near Capernaum. Those are the towns where Jesus probably taught.

Jesus remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

God's Word Today

God's Word

Mark 2:2-5 and 9b

Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and he preached the word to them. They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to him,

"Child, your sins are forgiven. Rise, pick up your mat and walk."

God's Word Today

A paralytic is a person who cannot walk. He is paralyzed. This paralytic wanted to be healed. His friends couldn't find a way in because of the crowd. They made a hole in the roof and lowered him down to Jesus. The crowd was amazed. But Jesus honored the man's faith. He also wanted to teach the crowd about God's love. He healed the man. He told him to get up and walk.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of the paralytic and his friends dropping through the roof to see Jesus.

God's Word

Mark 2:13-15

Jesus went out along the sea. All the crowd came to him and he taught them. As he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, sitting at the customs post. Jesus said to him,

"Follow me."

And he got up and followed Jesus.

God's Word Today

Jesus taught the disciples. Then He wanted them to follow Him. They did. When you hear about Jesus, He wants you to follow him also. Will you?

To Do Today

Today, tell Jesus you will follow Him.

God's Word

1 Corinthians 12:4 and 7

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.

God's Word Today

The Holy Spirit is in you. The Holy Spirit has many different gifts and He uses you to show others those gifts. His gifts are patience, joy, peace, self-control, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, goodness and love. One day He might want you to show patience. Another day He might want you to show joy. Another day He might want you to show love.

To Do Today

Today, ask the Holy Spirit what gift he wants you to show.

God's Word

Mark 2:20

But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.

God's Word Today

In this verse, the bridegroom is Jesus. He was telling his disciples that when he went to heaven, they could fast. Do you know what it means to fast? It means to go without something for a period of time. It usually means to go without some food. For example you could fast from eating candy for a week. People do this to show God that they are serious about their prayers.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your parents about what it means to fast. Ask them if they have ever fasted.

God's Word

Mark 2:27

Then Jesus said to them,

"The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath."

God's Word Today

Sabbath is a Jewish word for a day of rest. Our day of rest is Sunday. God took a day of rest. People need a day of rest. In many places no one works on Sunday. The whole town rests.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your family about a day of rest. Decide as a family to pick a day for rest.

Wednesday
January 23, 2019

God's Word

Mark 3:4

Jesus said to them,

"Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?"

God's Word Today

Jesus healed a man's hand and it was the sabbath. Some people thought he couldn't do that because it was a day of rest. But Jesus said you can do good things on a day of rest. You can do things that make people feel good.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of good things you can do during your sabbath or day of rest.

God's Word

Mark 3:7-8

Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. A large number of people followed from Galilee and from Judea. Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon.

God's Word Today

Jesus healed many. People traveled from far away to see Him. They wanted to be healed also.

To Do Today

Today, look at your map in the back of your Bible and find the Sea of Galilee where Jesus was with his disciples. Next, find all the places people came from to see Jesus.

God's Word

Mark 3:20

Jesus came with his disciples into the house. Again the crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat.

God's Word Today

Jesus was very popular. Why do you think He was so popular? What was He doing? He was healing people. He was teaching people. He was performing miracles. Is Jesus popular today? Why?

To Do Today

Today, tell Jesus why you love Him.

Sunday
January 27, 2019

God's Word

Luke 4:14-15

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.

God's Word Today

The reason Jesus could perform all of the miracles is because the Holy Spirit was in Him giving Him the power. The Holy Spirit is in you too after you are baptized. The Holy Spirit can give you power also.

To Do Today

Today, ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Thank Him for doing so.

Monday

God's Word

Mark 3:25

And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

God's Word

Mark 3:34-35

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of your family. Be sure and put Jesus in the picture with you.

God's Word

Mark 4:18-20

"Those sown among thorns are another sort. They are the people who hear the word, but worldly anxiety, the lure of riches, and the craving for other things intrude and choke the word, and it bears no fruit. But those sown on rich soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit thirty and sixty and a hundredfold."

God's Word Today

Jesus talked in parables. That means He told stories to explain about God and heaven. In these verses He is telling us that if we hear God's word and let worry, or greed or other things take over our thoughts, we are like thorns. But if we hear God's word and are filled with love, we will be like delicious fruit.

To Do Today

Today, think about the Bible verses you heard this week. Do they make you feel good?

Thursday
January 31, 2019

God's Word

Mark 4:24

Jesus also told them,

"Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you."

God's Word Today

What Jesus means by measure is what you do in life and He says what you do will be done to you. If you are good to people, people will be good to you. If you are mean to people, people will be mean to you. If you love people, they will love you. If you hate people, they will hate you.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your parents about what Jesus said. Make a list of the good things you plan to do today.
